I hardly slept for the next few nights as I stared up at the ceiling, trying to determine an approach for the portrait, tying myself in knots with nerves. It has to be the best thing I’ve ever painted. It must be perfect.

For the first time since the initial thought of painting Vittoria, I wondered whether I could achieve the goal I set — of it being a masterpiece.

This thought, that I was missing something significant, dogged my dreams in the days leading up to the first sitting.
